Facebook Changes Its Name To Meta | Determined Towards Creating Metaverse
In a sudden change of events, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, announced a name change. As per the official announcement, the new name of Facebook would be Meta. In the announcement, the company announced that they are focusing on more things and the new name would encapsulate everything they are up to. As per sources, the company is focusing heavily on areas like Virtual Reality.
To all the social media platform users, the name of social media platforms – Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp – would not be changed. Only the parent company that owns all these platforms have been renamed and rebranded. Similar to the recent instance, Google also changed the name of its parent company to Alphabet in 2015.
Mark Zuckerberg announced that he is working towards building a Metaverse. His motive is to build an online world where users can work, communicate and game in a virtual environment. It would be done using VR headsets. As per him, the current company isn’t capable enough to represent everything they are working on and for the same reason, they decided to rebrand the parent company to deliver a clear message. Facebook is not just about social media platforms, it is much more now. “Over time, I hope that we are seen as a metaverse company and I want to anchor our work and our identity on what we’re building towards,” he told a virtual conference.
What is Metaverse?
There are varying views on metaverse since its announcement. Some people think it is a higher version of virtual reality only while others think of metaverse as the future of internet usage. Metaverse would provide you with the opportunity to go beyond your computer. Instead of being on the computer, it might give the chance of using a VR headset to utilize all the features and platforms. It is expected to be more than the current level of VR.
Current VR only allows users to do gaming. With Metaverse, VR will evolve and might allow the users to do work, play, attend concerts, and much more. Although there is no agreed meaning of VR of the metaverse, it can be surely assumed that Meta will take the current VR to a whole new level.
Previously, Facebook had competed with its rivals with Oculus headsets. According to some analysts, FB launched those headsets at a cheaper rate than rivals and some believe FB gave them at a loss. Now, FB has learned its lesson and announced that building metaverse would not be possible for one company. They are sure to collaborate with more companies. The company that created Fortnite has also shown interest in metaverse long ago. We can expect the collaboration of these two companies soon for the metaverse project.
